Matthew 21:23 Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him. “By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you this authority?”

Jesus wasn’t one of them. He didn’t belong to the “in” crowd. They didn’t control Him. They couldn’t control Him. But they also couldn’t deny that He spoke with authority, that He demonstrated authority over sickness and disease and evil spirits and nature itself. What gives this Jesus the right, the power, the ability to do these things?

I’m not sure the chief priests really wanted an answer to this question. At least it is clear that they wouldn’t have believed Jesus if He had answered them. “Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.'” Matthew 28:18. God the Father gave Jesus the authority. It is by the authority of God Almighty, Yahweh, the one and only God.

Now, this has implications. Since Jesus is speaking as God, we need to listen and obey. There is no debating whether His words apply to us or if what He says is negotiable. It’s not! Jesus is the Word made flesh. His words are God’s words. Don’t take that too lightly. It’s easy to read over the Gospels time and time again and not really listen to the words of Jesus. I mean really hear what He is saying to you and to me. I know I have missed it at times. Next time you read or hear His words, focus on every one, take them in, let Him speak to you even today. There is nothing and no one that is outside of His authority.
