Matthew 18:7 “Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come!”
The word translated stumble in this verse is the Greek word skandalon. It literary means the trigger stick of a trap. Isn’t that a great description of the temptations that this world puts in front of us each day? The world wants to trap us. When we are trapped we are ineffective for the Kingdom of Heaven. It’s a little consolation that the world will be held accountable for setting these traps for us.
We should expect the world to try to trap us but brothers and sisters in Christ, we should find safety there. We are called to love one another, to build up one another, to encourage one another. Our words are to bring life and hope and peace. Our life is to reflect Jesus to the world around us. But then I got to thinking about my own life. How often have I created a stumbling block for someone else? Have I placed a trap before others with my words or actions? Or lack of actions? What do I do that might cause another brother or sister to stumble? Lord have mercy!
“Do not cause anyone to stumble” 1 Corinthians 10:32.
