Matthew 16:26 “What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?”

Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness by taking Him to the top of a high mountain and showing Him all the kingdoms of this world and their splendor and said that all this he would give to Jesus if He would bow down and worship him (Matthew 4:8-9. Jesus didn’t give in. Now, Satan has never come to me and offered me all the world but he does flash shiny trinkets before my eyes. He tempts me with things of this world every day. And how many times have I forfeited a bit of my soul to posses them? It goes something like this. “Don’t you want them to like you? If you give in, that will make them like you. Go ahead. You’ll finally fit in.” Sometimes it sounds like this. “Just take it. You know you want it. No one will notice. They owe it to you anyways.” Or maybe like this. “Your are just one promotion away from the top. That’s what you’ve always wanted. Just start a little rumor about what you saw the other guy doing and you’ll be set.”

Each time that I give in, a little bit of my soul is given away. I forfeit it bit by bit. What about you? What voices do you hear whispering in your ear? Thank God that we have been purchased forever through the blood of Jesus. Thank God that my salvation is not dependent upon my ability to say no. Lord help me to hold fast, to stand strong, to resist the devil. I need your help today.
