Matthew 8:21-22 Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”
In the Jewish culture, when the disciple says that wants to go and bury his father, it could included taking care of his father until he dies. Also, burial for the Jews is more than just placing the body in the ground. There is a week or more of mourning and celebrating the life of the person that has passed. Family and friends gather repeatedly to share stories and to be there for each other. But when Jesus calls there is nothing more important than following Jesus. He says, let the spiritually dead bury those who are dead. Let those that I haven’t called tend to the things of this world. Those that are spiritually alive must follow me. When the spark is there, we must act upon it. When the prompting comes, we must respond. There is no time to waste. Not a minute to spare. I dare not let the cares and concerns of this world choke out His Word or His call on my life.
Jesus tells us in Matthew 10:37 “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” When Jesus calls us, we are to follow. We are to seek first His kingdom. No excuses. No delays. No limitations. Our response should be, “Here am I, send me.” Isaiah 6:8. Where is Jesus calling you to follow Him today? Have you resisted His call? Are you making excuses, delaying what He is asking of you? Today is the day. He is calling out to you again, “Follow me!”
