35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
Jesus was in the stern, sleeping. I can just hear the grumbling going on by the disciples. “Here we are striving with everything we have to just keep this boat afloat and all He can do is sleep!” “Look at Him lying there, He doesn’t even care about us!” “We’re all going to die and He won’t even help try to save us!” Can’t you hear those accusations when you read, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
What a powerful question! Jesus, don’t you care if … Think about it for a second. Look inside. Does that question ever rise up within you? Jesus, don’t you care if … don’t you care if I can’t pay my bills this month? … don’t you care if my cancer comes back? … don’t you care if I’m lonely … don’t you care if I’m evicted … Jesus, don’t you care?
My current question sounds like, “Jesus, don’t you care if I have to shoulder all the work myself and wear myself out at this job?” How about you? Are you questioning Jesus’ love and care for you in some area of your life today?
I love how Jesus responds to the disciples question. He responds to them, not with words, instead, He shows them how much He cares for them. He demonstrates His love for them. Isn’t that what He has done for us on the cross? He didn’t tell us how much He cares, he showed us how much He cares. And He still shows us, daily, in the most amazing ways, how much He cares for us. He woke you up today. He gave you life and breath today. He has put these words in front of you today. He has given you the ability to read them. And how much more has He done for you today?
So, no matter how often I question His care for me, no matter how many times I doubt His love, He will always respond the same way. By showing me, again, just how much He loves me.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,
that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
