1 Corinthians 13:4 “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.”
It does not envy. Love does not envy, it isn’t jealous, it doesn’t covet. When I envy I want what another has. I look at them and I only see what I am lacking. Envy and jealousy are constantly comparing and coming up short. My energy is spent striving to be someone I’m not called to be. There is no contentment, no peace, no joy, no love when one is consumed with envy. Love does not envy reminds me of someone that befriends someone just to gain what they have. Like a character on a television show that the audience knows doesn’t really care about others. They just want to get ahead and they’re willing to tear others down to get what they want. It is so easy to see it from the outside, watching the show. The lies. The flattery. The gifts. Putting up a facade for one person to fall for. It is much harder to see it when it is happening to you. “Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.” Proverbs 27:6. That is why it is so important to have people around you that you trust enough to listen to. People that are willing to tell you the truth even when you don’t want to hear it. Faithful friends.
Have you ever been hurt by someone that just wanted what you had? How did it feel when you found out? Now look at your own heart. Is there any envy or jealousy that you need to confess? Love, it does not envy!
