John 14:7 “If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

“If you really know me.” Jesus doesn’t mess around. He never beats around the bush but always goes straight to the heart of the issue. I like the way it is worded in the New King James Version, “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also” Imagine being one of the disciples and hearing Jesus speak these words to you. If you had known me. The implication is that they didn’t really know Him. Wow! Harsh words perhaps?

I believe that Jesus is saying much the same thing to us today. When I listen to these words through the filter of shame I hear, “If you had known Me … maybe you wouldn’t have made that mistake.” But the truth is, I did know you and I still made that mistake. When I listen through the filter of fear, all I hear is the if. Meaning that maybe I don’t or won’t know Him. But the truth is, my faith is in Him and His ability to keep me in Him. When I listen with my heart, I hear, “You really know Me.” I genuinely, deeply, affectionately, intimately know Jesus. But only to the extent that He chooses to reveal Himself to me. And so I continue to pursue Him. To know Him more fully with each breath.

What do you hear today as Jesus speaks these words to you? “If you really know me …”
