Psalm 51:8 “Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice.”

When I am down in the dumps, I don’t always want to be cheered up. I like a good pity party. I like feeling sorry for myself. When I’m grumpy, I don’t want someone to try to make me smile. That just makes me more grumpy. It is hard to hear joy and gladness when I am crushed. But oftentimes, it is exactly what I need.

David prays here that God would let him hear joy and gladness. That his heart would not be hardened to the joy that God has all around him. That his ear would be open to the joyful sounds and laughter that are all around if he only paid attention. So that his innermost being would once again rejoice!

Do you need to hear joy today? Have you forgotten the sound of gladness? Are you under such a heavy weight that you have been unwilling to rejoice? Ask God to let you hear the joy around you. Ask Him to cause you to be open to gladness in your life. Ask Him to help you to rejoice in the broken areas of your life. For the joy of the Lord is your strength (Neh. 8:10).
