Psalm 143:1 “LORD, hear my prayer, listen to my cry for mercy; in your faithfulness and righteousness come to my relief.”
Psalm 143 is a psalm written by David and like many of the psalms, it is a prayer to God. “Lord, hear my prayer.” Does David doubt that God always hears his prayer? He makes a special point to start this psalm by asking God to hear him. Do you ever doubt that God hears your prayers? 1 John 5:14 tells us, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” So maybe David isn’t doubting that God hears his prayers as much as he might be doubting that what he is asking for is according to God’s will. Do you ever doubt that what you are asking for is God’s will?
“Listen to my cry for mercy.” David is not only praying here, he is crying out to God for mercy. That phrase “cry for mercy” is used 9 times in the Bible and all of them are in the Psalms. It is also translated as supplication and plea. This is a desperate plea to God. Are you in a desperate situation in your life? Is your heart crying out to the Lord? David’s desire from God was mercy. God’s mercy is enough for David in his desperate situation. Is it enough for you in yours?
David relies on two qualities of God’s character in his prayer, God’s faithfulness and God’s righteousness. God’s faithfulness means that He will never go back on a promise. It means that even when we are faithless, He cannot be less than who He is but will always be faithful (2 Timothy 2:13). What He says will always come to pass. His Word will not return void but will accomplish what it was sent out to do (Isaiah 55:11). Can you lean on His faithfulness today? And God’s righteousness means He is just and He is judge, He righteous in His character and righteous in His actions, He is morally, ethically, objectively, and subjectively righteous. Therefore, His actions will be right … always. Can you trust in His righteousness on your behalf today?
Wherever you find yourself today, know that God hears your prayer. Your cries never fall on deaf ears. He is faithful to hear and faithful to answer. And His answer will always be right. You can count on it and count on Him today.
