Proverbs 19:21 “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.”
I too often get caught up in the race. The fast paced, got to get more done, squeeze as much as possible into each day, race. Most of the time, those plans I have aren’t God’s plans. Most of the time it’s unhealthy and self-focused. Most of the time it wears me out. But I’m getting better.
The older I get the more I am beginning to understand this verse. In the moment it is so hard to remember that distractions and interruptions are often times part of God’s plan for us. When I’m late for a meeting and my universal belt goes out and strands me far from my destination, I have to make a conscious effort to see that God had another plan. When I have more things on my to-do list than I can get done and my brother calls needing some advice, I have to purposely let go of my agenda and embrace what God has brought my way.
I’m learning to slow down. I’m learning to hold my plans loosely and hold onto God tightly. When I look at Jesus’ life, I don’t see him ever getting caught up in the race. He was never too busy for the one God sent across His path. Jesus did it perfectly. Time for friends, time for meals, time for teaching, time for others, time for prayer, time for himself. And never stressing about what He didn’t get done.
Lord, help us to travel this life at your pace. Help us to see our interruptions as your plans. Help us to not get caught up in the race but remember that the race has already been won. In your precious name, Jesus, amen!
