Proverbs 18:21 “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

Every day we speak thousands of words. Therefore, every day we have thousands of opportunities to speak life into the world around us. You might not think that you have opportunities to minister to very many people but we each have thousands of small chances to change someone’s life. You can speak life or death. Which will you choose?

Matthew 12:36-37 “But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”

I don’t often think of each word as having an impact. I don’t often take to heart the weight and importance of each word that escapes my lips. How many of my words are empty and idle, without depth and meaning? I’ll one day have to give account for what I did with those words.

James 3:2-6 “We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check. When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.”

Kind of puts things in perspective. Doesn’t it? Life or death? You choose the impact your words will have today. We can crush a spirit with the wrong word or we can strengthen and encourage a feeble heart. We can praise our Lord or curse Him with the same tongue. How will you use your tongue today?
