Proverbs 18:11 “The wealth of the rich is their fortified city; they imagine it a wall too high to scale.”

In verse 10, we focused on “The name of the Lord is a fortified tower”. In contrast, here we have “The wealth of the rich is their fortified city; they imagine it a wall too high to scale.” The translated imagine can be imagination, idol, and conceit. How fitting. The rich, in their conceit, imagine that the idol of money could somehow by their place of refuge.

The wealth of the rich, the wisdom of the wise, the talent of the actor, the strength of the athlete, the control of the leader. They are all the same. Whatever we put our trust in outside of Christ is done in vain. It will not protect us in the end. It might serve us for a season. We might get accolades or climb some corporate ladder. But in the end, what we’ve trusted in apart from God will collapse into the dust. For “You shall have no other gods before me.” Ex. 20:3.

  • What have you trusted in other than God?
  • What benefit did you gain from this?
  • What was the cost?
  • Is God highlighting something in your life that He wants you to submit to His authority?

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” Proverbs 3:5.  Let God alone by your shield, your buckler, your fortress, your strong tower, your sure defense. He is the Alpha and the Omega. Let Him go before you and be your rear guard. In Him you will find safety, security, peace, and protection. All others will fail you but He is faithful.
