Proverbs 17:3 “The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the LORD tests the heart.”
We don’t like to think about God testing us. We’d rather focus on His unfailing love or His amazing grace. But the truth is that the Lord tests the hearts of His servants. Just as silver or gold is purified in the furnace, heated up until the dross rises to the surface, our lives get hot to draw out the impurities that we hide in our hearts.
“See, I have refined you, though not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.” Isaiah 48:10. God’s plan for us is so much bigger than just making us happy. He’s teaching us, training us, forming character within us. Just like a parent. We’ve all seen those parents that are just trying to be their children’s best friend. They never say no to them. They cater to every whim their child has. And the result? They end up raising a monster that the rest of society has to deal with. Well, God our Father, is the perfect parent. He challenges us when we need to be challenged and comforts us when we need to be comforted. He disciplines us when we need to be disciplined and shows us grace when we need grace.
God doesn’t do this without a master plan for what He wants out of it all. “For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son” Romans 8:29. God is forming the image of Jesus in us. We are becoming more like our Savior every day. That is God’s goal when He turns up the heat in our lives. He wants to see Jesus shining back at Him. So, next time it starts getting hot in your life, let go of the junk and let Jesus shine.
