Proverbs 16:6 “Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for; through the fear of the LORD evil is avoided.”
Through the love and faithfulness of Jesus Christ our sin is atoned for. Not through anything that we might offer up in our own strength can the debt of sin be paid. For even our good works are but filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6). Solomon in all his wisdom knew that the only answer for sin was the perfect love of God. God’s overflowing mercy washes us clean through the shed blood of Jesus our Lord. Motivated by love and faithful to the end.
Our part in this verse is to fear the Lord and avoid evil. That reverent fear of the Lord that keeps us from sin. To know that He holds our very breath in His hands and to Him all authority to judge both the living and the dead resides. In awe and fear we walk circumspectly through this life. Avoiding the evil that surrounds us every day.
The goal in this verse is to hold in tension the unending love that gave everything for your salvation and the all powerful authority of the God of the universe. Just sit with those aspects of God’s character for a moment. Can you feel the tension between the two? Is one stronger for you than the other today? What is causing that? What do you need to bring them back in balance?
Lord, I know that I could never love you as much as you love me. I know that I will always fall short of being faithful to the end like you have been for me. Thank you that I don’t have to. That you did it for me. So, in awe and wonder, I bow my heart before you and remember your righteous, holy judgement that is to come. Help me to hold those in tension today. In the mighty, powerful name of your Son Jesus. Amen.
