Proverbs 14:30 “A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.”

Envy will eat you up from the inside out. It’s a cancer. Envy feeds on anything you want but don’t have. We look around at others and can only see where we don’t measure up. It’s a life of constant comparisons. The Hebrew word can also be translated as jealousy. It is passion that has morphed into something evil. Envy is always uncertain, uneasy, wanting. Envy is never satisfied. There is never a point when good is good enough.

Standing in stark contrast to this life is a heart at peace. Other translations use a peaceful heart, a tranquil heart, a sound heart. To be content and at peace with God and man is to be at peace in the depth of our being. This peace is wholesome and pure and gives life to your whole body. A heart at peace doesn’t need anything. There is no striving for more but just rest and security within.

Which would you rather be around? Which would you rather be?

Can you picture a time when you have felt that peace that surpasses all understanding? That shalom of the soul that is life giving to all who come in contact with it? Picture a time when your heart was at peace. Close your eyes and breathe in that peace once again. Let the peace of God fill you again today. His peace, His perfect peace, is for you every day. All we have to do is ask Him for it.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” Isaiah 26:3

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27
