“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never harm me.” We try our best not to let what people say hurt us but words are powerful. They can be powerfully good, bringing life and healing, or they can be powerfully evil, bringing death and pain.
“The tongue has the power of life and death” Proverbs 18:21
So often, rash, ill thought out words, are spoken wounding the recipient deeply. They are reckless words spoken about another person. They tear at the heart and soul with presumptions and judgments, with accusations and slander, with hatred and vengeance. How many of us carry messages from our childhood that still ring in our ears today? Hurtful words spoken to us many years ago that have left their mark on us.
- “You’ll never amount to anything!”
- “Why can’t you be more like your brother?”
- “You’re fat and ugly!”
- “You’re no good!”
- “You are not worthy of love!”
- “I hate you!”

The wounds these words create are deep and painful and impact our lives as we act out the lies we’ve believed to be true about us. We wonder why we can’t keep a job, why our relationships always fail, or why we hate the person staring back at us in the mirror every morning.
But just as words can wound, words can bring healing as well. Words spoken in love, honest words of encouragement, truths about us that replace the lies. Wise words, well thought out, spoken at the right time, can change someone’s life forever.
- “Well done!”
- “You are uniquely precious to me!”
- “I choose you!”
- “You will do even greater things than these!”
- ” I love you!”
