16 There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, 19 a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.

Can you find yourself in this list? Let this passage be a mirror for you today. As you gaze into it, what do you see? Do you see yourself reflected in any of this. I can see myself in at least four of the seven things that God detests. If I really look hard, I think I can see myself in all seven!

There is nothing good in our flesh. There is nothing that seeks after God. Every bit of my flesh is in rebellion to God. And every day, I need to be reminded to walk in the Spirit. Every day I am called to crucify the flesh. Every day I must seek first the kingdom of God. Each moment I am to submit to God, to humble myself under His mighty hand.

You want to know how to stand up against these qualities that the Lord hates?

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:3-10.

It’s amazing how the Beatitudes so directly contrast the list in Proverbs 6. God hates what attacks what He loves and loves what stands against what He hates! Jim Cymbala once said, “Be for what God is for and against what God is against”. How true!
