6 Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! 7 It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, 8 yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest. 9 How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? 10 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest— 11 and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.

Though the world is not as it should be because of The Fall, we can still learn much from God’s creation. No one makes the ant do what it needs to do to be ready for the cold of winter. The ant just does it. Mark 6:26 “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” I don’t see the birds wasting the day away doing nothing. Only baby birds sit in their nest and expect to get fed. Adult birds get up and find what God has provided for them.

This passage in Proverbs is not against rest. God made the Sabbath day for our rest. We don’t function well without it. Proverbs 6:6-11 is telling us that if I choose to rest when I should be working then I shouldn’t be surprised when I don’t have anything to show for it. It is about being faithful to the task that God has placed in front of you to do. It is about trusting that God will provide as you walk in simple obedience to His calling on your life.

What is your purpose? Do you know your mission statement? Why did God give you breath today? Are you doing it?
