17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Every action we take, ever word we speak, everything we do, we are to do in the name of the Lord. So, what does it mean to do it in the name of the Lord? The New Living Translation gives a clue by translating this phrase as, “do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus”. So, when we do something in the name of Jesus, we are acting as His ambassador and signing His name to the action.

If you were to look back over the past 24 hours, would you feel comfortable assigning Jesus’ name to your actions and words? All your actions and words? How about the last week? Are you ok attributing the things you have done and each word you have spoken as coming from the Lord? That’s a tough one. But that is what Paul is saying here.

You don’t act as an ambassador for Christ only on Sundays and Wednesdays. You can’t take off a day and quit representing Jesus for a while. We are to represent Jesus all day every day. And people are watching. Whether they admit it or not, they are watching how you and I behave.

How well have you been representing Jesus to this fallen world? To your co-workers? To your family? As you go about your day, try to keep this question out in front of you. Do you feel comfortable signing Jesus’ name to what you are about to say or do?
