There is a lot of meat in this verse but I want to focus on one part. The church is the body of Christ. I know that but I don’t very often look at it that way. Sometimes it is hard to see Jesus in His body. That’s a scary thought. Maybe I spend too much time focusing on individuals and overlook the body as a whole.
If I just zoom in on my toe, it doesn’t look much like a body. It isn’t very attractive. It doesn’t do a whole lot by itself. It’s not very strong. It doesn’t even see the light of day very often. I think we have the same concept of the church. We see the person that judges us at church. We notice the ones causing all the problems. We see those that have more or less than we do. We compare ourselves and others on some standard that we set up.
But the church is the body of Christ. We are all part of the body of Christ. Every individual is tied to all other individuals and together make a whole. Therefore, when I serve the church, I am serving Christ. When I love the church, I am loving Christ. When I support the church, I am supporting Christ. That sure changes the way I look at serving in my church. That puts some meaning behind how I treat the body of believers that I fellowship with on a regular basis. Paul was sacrificing for the church but in reality he was sacrificing for Christ. What are you willing to give up for Jesus? Are you willing to go there for His body?
