2 Surely you have heard about the administration of God’s grace that was given to me for you, 3 that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly. 4 In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5 which was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets. 6 This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.

Paul describes the gospel as a mystery in these verses, the mystery of Christ. That mystery, or secret, is that God has provided a means through Jesus for all mankind to be saved and to become members of the body of Christ. It truly is a mystery. How can the death of one pay for all? How can I receive this free gift? How does the Holy Spirit come to reside within me as a believer? How can an all knowing God not look on me and see everything that I’ve done wrong? How can I be forgiven for my sins? The answer is Jesus!

Jesus is the mystery revealed! Jesus is the truth proclaimed! Jesus is the Word made flesh! Jesus is the bread of life! Jesus is the door. Jesus is the vine. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life! Jesus is our high priest and our Passover lamb! Jesus is Emmanuel, God with us, and Jesus is the servant that washes us clean!

Only Jesus could combine all of this and so much more into one person. How deep and profound is the mystery of Christ. How fortunate we are that God has revealed to us this mystery. Thank you Lord for opening our eyes to see and our ears to hear the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ!
