13 As you know, it was because of an illness that I first preached the gospel to you,

God can use anything to preach the gospel message. Here, God uses Paul’s illness to preach the gospel. I was just sick last week and I don’t recall my sickness preaching to anyone. I just wanted to curl up on the couch not share the good news with anyone. How often I’ve missed opportunities to preach the gospel because I just didn’t feel like it. But God can use those weak times to speak to others, if we let Him.

“’My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ …For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Cor. 12:9-10 God’s power is made perfect in our times of weakness. When we have nothing left to give, no strength of our own, God’s power shines through. How often I forget those words when I am sick, or tired, or overwhelmed, or at the end of myself. But God is always faithful.

  • Can you remember a time when you have experienced God moving through you in power when you felt that you had nothing left to give?
  • Remember what you were feeling and thinking as you entered this experience. What were your thoughts?
  • Now recall what it was like to experience God at work in you and through you. How did it feel?
  • Is there a word or phrase that you can hold onto the next time you are feeling weak and unable to be used by God?

Let God’s light shine through you whether in strength or in weakness.
