11 When Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. 12 For before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group. 13 The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray.

Cephas began to draw back because he was afraid. Oh, how I can relate with Cephas. How many times have I backed down when confronted with opposition? Lord, have mercy! And what was the result of Cephas drawing back? Others joined him and were led astray. I wonder how many people that have been led astray when I backed down? How about you? Have you ever drew back when a challenge arose?

Thank God for people like Paul that see the hypocrisy and call it out. The rebuke hurts but I imagine that Cephas thanked Paul later when he realized the direction he was headed. This is another example of where I have fallen short. Many times I keep my mouth shut when I should speak truth into a situation. Lord, help me to be more confident and secure in the truth so that I will not hesitate to oppose false doctrine and hypocrisy face to face. And you, are there times that you have missed the opportunity to stand up for what is right and call out what is wrong?

Let’s follow Paul’s example in being bold in protecting the truth that we have been given. God will honor our efforts and we will be helping others from going astray.
