Joy is to be at the heart of our life as Christians. Our joy is a witness to the world around us that Jesus has made a difference in our lives, that this Christian life is not just a nice story but it’s a life changer! C.S. Lewis said, “It is a Christian duty … to be as happy as he can”.
But life is a struggle sometimes. Things don’t go the way we thought they should. Bad things happen to good people. What do we do when our circumstances don’t make us happy? Paul gives us a hint at how to keep our joy even in these difficult times. “The Lord is near.” No matter what you are going through, the Lord is near. He is right here with you in the midst of it. No matter who you have lost, the Lord is near. He’s coming back real soon and every tear will be wiped away.
We are to rejoice in the Lord. Not in the sin, the pain, the hardships, the heartaches, the death. No, we are to rejoice in the Lord. I can only do it by His strength and I can only do it by focusing on Him. No matter what you are going through we are encouraged to “Cast all your cares upon Him” 1 Peter 5:7.
- What in your life saps your joy?
- How can you change the effect this has on you?
- What would it look like for you to have joy in the midst of this circumstance?
Remember, the world is watching. Let His joy loose on your circumstances and watch what He does.
