14 Do everything without grumbling or arguing, 15 so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky 16 as you hold firmly to the word of life.

What a great description of this world that we live in! It was true then and it is true now. Our world is warped and crooked. It’s broken and has been since the Garden. It is not hard to see the effect of sin all around us and those who suffer in its darkness.

You may be asking, “But what can I do about it?” Paul tells us what to do in today’s verses. We are to be different! We are to shine! And how do we do that? Don’t grumble; don’t argue; don’t be the cause of what’s wrong in our world; be the solution! How? By offering the answer that the world needs, the Word of Life. We are called to be salt and light. As we hold on to Jesus, His light shines through us overcoming the darkness that surrounds us.

It seems so easy. It sounds so right. It feels so good. Unfortunately, I, too often, try to fit in instead of stand out. I play it small rather than being bold. And in doing so, I cover up that light that I am supposed to be shining into this dark world. And I wonder why there is so much darkness around me.

Shine like a star today! No matter what is going on around you. No matter where you find yourself today. Hold fast to the Word that became flesh and shine. With Jesus, we can dispel a little more darkness today.
